Pregnancy is the time when every woman becomes more conscious about food items and beverages. You may feel like something fizzy or sweet, but if you're reaching toward one diet soda, it should come into your mind whether it's actually safe or not. Let's find out.

What exactly is diet soda?
Diet soda is the sugar-free version of your favorite soft drink. As such, it uses artificial sweeteners instead of sugar to help keep the calories low. Common ones include:
1.Aspartame - commonly used in Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi
2.Sucralose commonly referred to as Splenda
3.Stevia: a natural sweetener derived from plants
4.Saccharin: Less common any more except in a few brands.
⚠️ Precautions during Pregnancy
1.Artificial Sweeteners
The FDA considers it safe in pregnancy in moderation for both aspartame and sucralose.
However, saccharin is best avoided since it can cross the placenta and remain in your baby’s tissues a little longer.
2.Caffeine
Many diet sodas contain caffeine. Too much (more than 200 mg a day) can increase the risk of low birth weight or miscarriage.Always check the label, because one can of diet cola may contain around 35–45 mg of caffeine.
3.Malnutrition
Diet sodas have no nutritious value. They do not provide any vitamins or minerals that either your body or your baby need during this important phase.
Smarter Choices-Healthier & Safer Options
If you need something carbonated or sweet, try:
1.Sparkling water with lemon or mint or berries
2.Homemade fruit-infused water
3.Fresh coconut water for natural sweetness and hydration.
4.Fresh fruit juices, in moderation(These are refreshing, safe, and actually good for your health)
Conceiving: The Last Word
An occasional diet soda isn't likely to harm your baby, but you're better off not making it a daily habit.
Only go in for natural drinks that feed you and your little one, and if you're not sure about anything, you can consult it with your doctor/dietitian before consuming artificial sweeteners regularly. In other words: It is alright sometimes, but everything in moderation. Stay hydrated the healthy way-your baby will thank you later.
